I know it may seem strange to be excited about a state fair art show, but the show in Minnesota is very special. It’s a mix of amateur and professional artists throughout the state and if you are accepted you consider yourself very lucky. I entered a smaller piece this year, a 20 x 16 titled “Toasted”. Hope you have a chance to visit it this year.

I love the Hopkins Art Center, such a beautiful building with a consistently fantastic line up of art and music. As a new member, I am super excited to be part of the fall juried show with The Modernists.
I want to thanks the judges for choosing my piece for an “Award of Merit”. We were given the award and the judges talked a bit about why each piece was chosen. Really thoughtful comments and awards were given in a wide range of subject and medium.

Most Romantic (& teeniest) Commission ever!
Spoiler alert…. she said YES!
The gentleman in question wanted to propose, but wanted his significant other to be able to choose her own ring. He didn’t want to be empty-handed when the moment arrived, so he came up with the idea of doing a painting. It had to fit in a ring box and it had to be done in a hurry since there were plane tickets already purchased. She thought it was just a fun getaway and yes, I think it turned out to be very fun indeed!!! :)
New commission for a lovely family.
Jenna & Brian were interested in some of my other fruit paintings, but they had a fun challenge for me…. how about a painting with only red fruit?
So how do you create a piece that has the intensity of red, but give it variety and a place for your eye to have a break from the strong color? My thought was that confining the red to 1/3 of the canvas left lots of room for your eye to wander and then return for a second look. Then, adding lots of different fruits in the red family gave it variety. Many different reds with unique details. In person the piece stands out because of the unity and the red is kind of comforting. Bit of a surprising result for me.
Anyway, I want to thank Jenna & Brian for engaging me to do a new painting for their growing art collection. It was an honor and a very fun challenge!!!
